How to Furnish a Studio Apartment

Not long ago I moved into to the 500-square-foot studio apartment I lived in when I first moved to Washington, DC. I was in my early 20's back then and single. Now I'm pushing 30, no longer individual and I have a much better sense of how exactly to decorate and furnish a studio in a manner that actually works.

I'm finding the connection with furnishing and decorating my tiny space liberating and exciting. I mean, I went from a big two bedroom to basically one long room. Needless to say, not only have I came across storage space an issue, walls as well! So I am faced with the issue of furnishing this little studio apartment and speaking from the previous failed attempt, I found a solution that works.

Keep reading for tips about decorating and furnishing your studio apartment... and hopefully some motivation from my furnishing and designing experience.

What is a studio apartment?

A studio, also sometimes referred to as efficiency can be an apartment that's between 300 to 600 square ft with essentially one room. The main one room functions as a living room, dining area, bedroom, and kitchen. Even your kitchen usually doesn't have an actual wall. My kitchen for example, has a sliding partition. One plus that I've seen in studios within DC and in my own hometown of NY are foyers, aka dressing places leading into the bathroom. I love those little areas because they're like awesome stroll in closets.

Effiiency Apartment Furniture Placement

The open floor plan of a studio apartment can make furniture placement quiet tricky. Who would like their sleeping space in ordinary site and practically touching the family room space. Or worse yet, be a combination of both and dead area. I know I don't so I'll share some tips with you about how exactly you too can have a little privacy in your intimate little area by choosing the right furniture pieces and partitioning spaces predicated on their functionality.

To start off

  • Take a look at your studio apartment's floor-plan (or even sketch one unless you have one readily available) and start playing around with different layout choices which will work for you. Can be your room big good enough to split it into sections and ensure it is more functional? Consider things such as whether you plan on having friends over frequently (in which particular case you'd need a guest-helpful layout) or you intend on doing the entertaining outside of your home and you will be using it just for some 'me time' and sleeping.
  • Remember that you have limited area so every furniture piece will have a major impact.
  • Get your creative juices flowing and start thinking of how you can utilize the furniture pieces you want to buy to function double-duty and placing your furniture in unconventional ways. Who knows, if your area is wide, maybe it'll make sense to place the couch in the middle of the area, a TV stand in the front and perhaps a cute three item dining area set in the back. The trunk of the couch could possibly be the separator you should designate your dining room. So there you curently have two different rooms. Then toward the end of the room, you can have your bed.

Ways to Separate a Room

Although quite a few may disagree, I think separating a studio apartment, which is simply one room is a must - particularly the bed from all of those other room. Having gone the 'open space' route, I quickly noticed that separating a studio space adds functionality instead of having your bed and living space back-to-back.

There are numerous of methods for you to separate a room - here are the major options you have.

  • Bookcase room divider. This one is my favored route, particularly with bookcases that have both sides finished. Not merely does a bookcase separate a room, it also does double-duty as storage space and book display situation. It can even double as a night time the stand by position placing your lamp using one of the shelves. I love how it keeps the room airy, while partitioning off the bed-area from the family room and looking so chic!
  • Folding screens. These can be found in all different sizes (short/tall, broad/narrow) and styles. They actually work as even more of a symbolic divider, required since we all need some privacy. Screens can also be an easy solution to completely conceal your bed by using two of them. You additionally have the option of getting a shoji, a Japanese-style area divider.
  • Curtains. This is a simple way to go - who needs walls when you're able to have a curtain? Well probably if you would like some privacy and quiet time but otherwise, curtains are inexpensive, easy to install, and simple to remove. It's a great temporary solution!
