Floral Décor - Decorating with Florals, Flower Patterns

Floral prints can at first be intimidating when you attempt to decorate with them, but if you know several guidelines they don’t have to be hard to work with.  Like real flowers, floral materials all have different patterns and personalities largely determined by the style, size, and shades in them.  Here are a few pointers to consider when preparation your floral décor.

Scale

This affects mood.  For example, a pillow with a big print will look newer when compared to a pillow with that same pattern in a smaller scale which would have significantly more of a sweet, classic feel depending on the particular print.

It’s Not Your Grandmother’s Sofa

Okay, to avoid that sensation of a granny sofa, avoid skirted bottom on any upholstered piece of furniture.  Offsetting the floral printing with a rug that has a graphic border, you’ll have significantly more of an eclectic experience than an “old” feel.

Flowers Can Look Good Anywhere

Actually if you have a large oriental area rug, it is possible to put floral pillows on your sofa or chairs; make it work with a common palette.  Just make sure you select at the very least two colors from your own rug and make sure the pillow has a lot of visible background having an open print.

Mix Floral Prints

Pairing different prints works when you make sure to match up the background colors of every piece.  For a cohesive impact, select one large pattern paired with two small patterns that all share the same background colour, like white or off-white.

Can Florals Be Masculine?

Sure!  There are lots of florals available that are non-girlie.  First off, avoid little prints in pastel hues which are definitely very feminine.  Steer more towards bright primary colours and bold florals in huge patterns which have more of today's vibe and are more male-friendly.

Traditional Florals

If you love feminine, muted tones and delicate blooms that have a vintage feel, go for a classic pattern as an elaborate rose pattern with repeats.  Put it on the wall space in wallpaper for a more dramatic look, or as a simple statement on a bedside lamp shade or perhaps a lovely quilt.  Old-fashioned forms of patterns can look even more current when they are in bold, more saturated colours rather than soft and subtle.

A traditional floral decorated room can include:

  • Tapestry pillows with thick, textured embroidery on a new velvet sofa or chair.
  • A good linen throw with a delicate embroidered floral touch and silk trim can add a nice touch to a chair or sofa.

Modern Florals

Contemporary florals are bold, oversized, and filled with energy.  Modern florals have a very graphic feeling and also feel fresh.  Repeating a well-loved pattern is okay, but know that it won’t be delicate; it’ll dominate the room - in a great way.  If you like clear lines and neutral furnishings, modern florals are a great match for you if you want to infuse florals into your décor.  Modern florals are crisp, yet enjoyment and give your room warmth and cheer simultaneously.

Modern floral touches:

A pillow with one huge graphic floral place on an all-white bed creates a advanced minimalist vibe.
A simple lamp shade with a large, bold floral on a solid lamp base is generally a nice touch.

Whatever way you finish up decorating your home, what counts the most is that it is pleasing to you and the ones who live with you.  If it feels to you but breaks a principle or two - go for it!  That's why the term "eclectic" exists!
