How to Furnish a Studio Apartment

I recently moved into to the 500-square-foot studio apartment I lived in when I very first moved to Washington, DC. I was in my own early 20's in the past and single. NOW I AM pushing 30, no longer solitary and I have a far greater sense of how exactly to decorate and furnish a studio in a manner that actually works.

I'm finding the experience of furnishing and decorating my tiny space liberating and exciting. I mean, I went from a big two bedroom to essentially one long room. Needless to say, not only have I found storage space an issue, walls as well! So I've been faced with the issue of furnishing this small studio house and speaking from the previous failed attempt, I came across a solution that works.

Keep reading for tips on decorating and furnishing your own studio apartment... and hopefully some motivation from my furnishing and decorating experience.

What is a studio apartment?

A studio, also sometimes referred to as efficiency can be an apartment that's between 300 to 600 square ft with essentially one room. The main one room functions as a living room, dining area, bedroom, and kitchen. Even the kitchen usually doesn't have a genuine wall. My kitchen for instance, has a sliding partition. One plus that I've seen in studios here in DC and in my own hometown of New York are foyers, aka dressing areas leading into the bathroom. I really like those little rooms because they're like awesome stroll in closets.

Effiiency Apartment Furniture Placement

The open floor plan of a studio apartment can make furniture placement quiet tricky. Who wants their sleeping space in plain site and virtually touching the living room space. Or worse however, be a combination of both and dead space. I understand I don't so I'll share some methods with you about how you too can have a little personal privacy in your intimate little area by choosing the right furnishings and partitioning spaces based on their functionality.

To start off

  • Take a look at your studio apartment's floor-plan (or even sketch one unless you have one on hand) and start playing around with different layout choices that will work for you. Is your room big sufficiently to split it into sections and ensure it is more functional? Consider things such as whether you plan on having friends over frequently (in which case you'd want a guest-pleasant layout) or you intend on doing the entertaining beyond your home and will be using it just for some 'me period' and sleeping.
  • Remember that you have limited room so every piece of furniture will have a major impact.
  • Get your innovative juices flowing and start thinking about how you can use the furniture pieces you need to buy to serve double-duty and putting your furniture in unconventional methods. Who knows, if your space is wide, maybe it'll seem sensible to place the sofa in the middle of the area, a TV stand in leading and perhaps a cute three piece dining area set in the back again. The trunk of the couch can be the separator you need to designate your dining area. So there you already have two different rooms. Then toward the end of the area, you could have your bed.

Ways to Separate a Room

Although quite a few may disagree, I think separating a studio apartment, which is just one room is crucial - particularly the bed from all of those other room. Having gone the 'open up space' route, I quickly recognized that separating a studio room adds functionality as opposed to having your bed and living space back-to-back.

There are a variety of methods for you to separate a room - here are the major options you have.

  • Bookcase room divider. That one is my favored route, particularly with bookcases that have both sides finished. Not only does a bookcase separate an area, in addition, it does double-duty as storage space and book display case. It could even double as a night time stand by placing your lamp on one of the shelves. I love how it keeps the area airy, while partitioning off the bed-area from the family room and looking so chic!
  • Folding screens. These can be found in all different sizes (short/tall, broad/narrow) and styles. They actually work as more of a symbolic divider, essential since most of us need some privacy. Screens may also be an easy way to completely conceal your bed by using two of them. You also have the option of getting a shoji, a Japanese-style area divider.
  • Curtains. This is an easy way to go - who needs walls when you're able to have a curtain? Well probably if you would like some privacy and peace and quiet but otherwise, curtains are cheap, easy to install, and simple to remove. It's a excellent temporary solution!
