How to Furnish a Studio Apartment

I recently moved into to the 500-square-foot studio apartment We lived in when I very first moved to Washington, DC. I was in my own early 20's in the past and single. Now I'm pushing 30, no longer one and I have a far greater sense of how to decorate and furnish a studio in a manner that actually works.

I'm finding the experience of furnishing and decorating my tiny space liberating and exciting. After all, I went from a big two bedroom to essentially one long room. Obviously, not only have I found storage space in short supply, walls as well! So I've been faced with the issue of furnishing this small studio apartment and speaking from a previous failed attempt, I found a solution that works.

Keep reading for tips about decorating and furnishing your studio apartment... and hopefully some motivation from my furnishing and designing experience.

Exactly what is a studio apartment?

A studio, also sometimes referred to as efficiency can be an apartment that's between 300 to 600 square feet with essentially one room. The main one room functions as a full time income room, dining area, bedroom, and kitchen. Even your kitchen usually doesn't have an actual wall. My kitchen for example, includes a sliding partition. One plus that I've seen in studios within DC and in my own hometown of NY are foyers, aka dressing areas leading into the bathroom. I love those little areas because they're like awesome walk in closets.

Effiiency Apartment Furniture Placement

The open floor plan of a studio apartment could make furniture placement quiet tricky. Who wants their sleeping space in basic site and virtually touching the living room space. Or worse however, be a mixture of both and dead room. I know I don't so I'll share some tricks with you about how you too can have just a little privacy in your intimate little space by choosing the right furnishings and partitioning spaces based on their functionality.

To start off

  • Have a look at your studio apartment's floor-plan (or even sketch one if you don't have one readily available) and start experimenting with different layout options that will work for you. Is your room big sufficiently to split it into sections and ensure it is more functional? Consider things like whether you plan on having friends over regularly (in which particular case you'd need a guest-pleasant layout) or you plan on doing the entertaining outside of your home and will be using it just for some 'me period' and sleeping.
  • Remember that you have limited space so every piece of furniture will have a significant impact.
  • Get your innovative juices flowing and begin thinking about how you can utilize the furniture pieces you need to buy to provide double-duty and placing your furniture in unconventional methods. Who knows, if your area is wide, maybe it'll seem sensible to place the sofa in the middle of the room, a TV stand in leading and perhaps a cute three piece dining room set in the back. The back of the couch could possibly be the separator you should designate your dining room. So there you already have two different rooms. After that toward the end of the area, you could have your bed.

Ways to Separate a Room

Although quite a few may disagree, I think separating a studio apartment, which is simply one room is crucial - specially the bed from all of those other room. Having gone the 'open up space' route, I quickly realized that separating a studio space adds functionality as opposed to having your bed and living space back-to-back.

There are a number of ways you can separate a room - here are the major options you have.

  • Bookcase room divider. That one is my favored route, particularly with bookcases that have both sides finished. Not only does a bookcase separate an area, in addition, it does double-duty as storage space and book display case. It could even double as a night stand by placing your lamp using one of the shelves. I love how it keeps the room airy, while partitioning off the bed-area from the family room and looking so chic!
  • Folding screens. These can be found in all different sizes (short/tall, broad/narrow) and styles. They really work as even more of a symbolic divider, required since we all need some privacy. Screens can also be an easy solution to completely conceal your mattress by using two of them. You additionally have the option of getting a shoji, a Japanese-style area divider.
  • Curtains. This is an easy strategy to use - who needs walls when you're able to have a curtain? Well probably if you want some privacy and peace and quiet but otherwise, curtains are inexpensive, easy to install, and simple to remove. It's a great temporary solution!
