How to Furnish a Studio Apartment

Not long ago I moved into to the 500-square-foot studio apartment We lived in when I very first moved to Washington, DC. I was in my own early 20's in the past and single. NOW I AM pushing 30, no longer individual and I have a far greater sense of how to decorate and furnish a studio in a manner that actually works.

I'm finding the experience of furnishing and decorating my small space liberating and exciting. I mean, I went from a large two bedroom to basically one long room. Needless to say, not only have I came across storage space in short supply, walls as well! So I've been faced with the dilemma of furnishing this small studio house and speaking from a previous failed attempt, I found a solution that works.

Keep reading for tips on decorating and furnishing your own studio apartment... and hopefully some motivation from my furnishing and designing experience.

Exactly what is a studio apartment?

A studio, also sometimes known as efficiency is an apartment that's between 300 to 600 square ft with essentially one space. The main one room functions as a living room, dining area, bedroom, and kitchen. Even the kitchen usually doesn't have a genuine wall. My kitchen for example, has a sliding partition. One plus that I've observed in studios here in DC and in my own hometown of NY are foyers, aka dressing locations leading into the bathroom. I love those little rooms because they're like awesome stroll in closets.

Effiiency Apartment Furniture Placement

The open floor plan of a studio apartment could make furniture placement quiet tricky. Who would like their sleeping space in simple site and virtually touching the family room space. Or worse yet, be a combination of both and dead room. I know I don't so I'll talk about some tips with you about how you too can have a little personal privacy in your intimate little area by choosing the right furnishings and partitioning spaces predicated on their functionality.

To start off

  • Have a look at your studio apartment's floor-plan (or sketch one unless you have one readily available) and start playing around with different layout options that may work for you. Is your room big sufficiently to split it into sections and make it more functional? Consider things like whether you plan on having friends over regularly (in which particular case you'd would like a guest-helpful layout) or you intend on doing the entertaining outside of your home and you will be using it just for some 'me time' and sleeping.
  • Keep in mind that you have limited room so every furniture piece will have a major impact.
  • Get your innovative juices flowing and start thinking of how you can utilize the furniture pieces you want to buy to assist double-duty and putting your furniture in unconventional ways. Who knows, if your space is wide, maybe it'll make sense to place the sofa in the middle of the room, a TV stand in leading and perhaps a cute three piece dining room set in the back. The trunk of the couch can be the separator you need to designate your dining room. So there you already have two different rooms. Then toward the end of the area, you can have your bed.

Ways to Separate a Room

Although quite a few may disagree, I believe separating a studio apartment, which is simply one room is a must - specially the bed from the rest of the room. Having gone the 'open space' route, I quickly realized that separating a studio room adds functionality as opposed to having your bed and living space back-to-back.

There are a variety of methods for you to separate a room - below are the major options you have.

  • Bookcase room divider. That one is my preferred route, particularly with bookcases which have both sides finished. Not only does a bookcase separate an area, in addition, it does double-duty as space for storage and book display situation. It can even double as a night the stand by position placing your lamp using one of the shelves. I love how it keeps the area airy, while partitioning off the bed-area from the family room and looking so chic!
  • Folding screens. These come in all different sizes (short/tall, wide/narrow) and styles. They really work as even more of a symbolic divider, required since we all need some privacy. Screens can also be an easy way to completely conceal your bed through the use of two of them. You additionally have the option of getting a shoji, a Japanese-style area divider.
  • Curtains. This is a simple strategy to use - who needs walls when you're able to have a curtain? Well maybe if you would like some privacy and peace and quiet but otherwise, curtains are cheap, easy to install, and easy to remove. It's a great temporary solution!
