Floral Décor - Decorating with Florals, Flower Patterns

Floral prints can at first be intimidating when you attempt to decorate with them, but once you learn a few guidelines they don’t need to be hard to work with.  Like real flowers, floral fabrics all have different designs and personalities largely dependant on the style, size, and colours in them.  Below are a few pointers to consider when arranging your floral décor.

Scale

This affects mood.  For example, a pillow with a big print will look newer when compared to a pillow with that same pattern in an inferior scale which would have more of a sweet, vintage feel depending on the actual print.

It’s Not Your Grandmother’s Sofa

Okay, to avoid that sensation of a granny sofa, stay away from skirted bottom on any upholstered furniture piece.  Offsetting the floral print with a rug which has a graphic border, you’ll have significantly more of an eclectic feel than an “old” feel.

Flowers Can Look Good Anywhere

Even if you have a huge oriental area rug, you can put floral pillows on your own sofa or chairs; make it work with a typical palette.  Just make sure you select at least two colors from your own rug and make certain the pillow has a lot of visible background having an open print.

Mix Floral Prints

Pairing different prints works once you make sure to suit the background colors of every piece.  For a cohesive impact, select one large pattern paired with two small patterns that all share the same background color, like white or off-white.

Can Florals Be Masculine?

Sure!  There are lots of florals available which are non-girlie.  First off, avoid little prints in pastel hues which are very feminine.  Steer even more towards bright primary colours and bold florals in huge patterns which have more of today's vibe and are more male-friendly.

Traditional Florals

If you value feminine, muted tones and delicate blooms that have a vintage feel, get a classic pattern as an elaborate rose design with repeats.  Put it on the wall space in wallpaper for a more dramatic appearance, or as a simple statement on a bedside lampshade or a lovely quilt.  Old-fashioned types of patterns can look even more current when they are in bold, more saturated colors rather than soft and subtle.

A normal floral decorated room range from:

  • Tapestry pillows with solid, textured embroidery on a velvet sofa or chair.
  • A nice linen throw with a delicate embroidered floral touch and silk trim can add a good touch to a chair or sofa.

Modern Florals

Contemporary florals are bold, oversized, and full of energy.  Modern florals have a very graphic feeling and also feel fresh.  Repeating a well-loved design is okay, but know that it won’t be subtle; it’ll dominate the area - in a great way.  If you like clear lines and neutral furnishings, modern florals are a great match for you if you want to infuse florals into your décor.  Contemporary florals are crisp, yet fun and give your space warmth and cheer at the same time.

Modern floral touches:

A pillow with one large graphic floral set on an all-white bed creates a sophisticated minimalist vibe.
A simple lamp shade with a big, bold floral on a good lamp base is continually a nice touch.

Whatever way you finish up decorating your home, what matters the most is that it's pleasing to you and those who live life with you.  If it feels right to you but breaks a rule or two - do it now!  That's why the word "eclectic" exists!
