How to Furnish a Small Studio Apartment

I recently moved into to the 500-square-foot studio apartment We lived in when I very first moved to Washington, DC. I was in my early 20's back then and single. NOW I AM pushing 30, no longer individual and I have a far greater sense of how to decorate and furnish a studio in a manner that actually works.

I'm finding the connection with furnishing and decorating my small space liberating and exciting. After all, I went from a huge two bedroom to essentially one long room. Obviously, not only have I came across storage space an issue, walls as well! So I am faced with the dilemma of furnishing this small studio house and speaking from the previous failed attempt, I came across a solution that works.

Keep reading for tips about decorating and furnishing your studio apartment... and hopefully some motivation from my furnishing and decorating experience.

Exactly what is a studio apartment?

A studio, also sometimes referred to as efficiency is an apartment that's between 300 to 600 square ft with essentially one space. The one room functions as a full time income room, dining area, bedroom, and kitchen. Even your kitchen usually doesn't have a genuine wall. My kitchen for example, includes a sliding partition. One plus that I've observed in studios here in DC and in my hometown of New York are foyers, aka dressing areas leading into the bathroom. I really like those little rooms because they're like awesome walk in closets.

Effiiency Apartment Furniture Placement

The open floor plan of a studio apartment could make furniture placement quiet tricky. Who would like their sleeping space in simple site and virtually touching the living room space. Or worse yet, be a mixture of both and dead room. I know I don't so I'll share some methods with you about how exactly you too can have a little personal privacy in your intimate little area by choosing the right furniture pieces and partitioning spaces based on their functionality.

To start off

  • Take a look at your studio apartment's floor-plan (or sketch one if you don't have one on hand) and start experimenting with different layout choices which will work for you. Can be your room big good enough to split it into sections and ensure it is more functional? Consider things like whether you plan on having friends over frequently (in which case you'd wish a guest-pleasant layout) or you plan on doing the entertaining beyond your home and will be using it simply for some 'me period' and sleeping.
  • Remember that you have limited area so every furniture piece will have a significant impact.
  • Get your creative juices flowing and begin thinking of how you can use the furniture pieces you would like to buy to provide double-duty and placing your furniture in unconventional ways. Who knows, if your area is wide, maybe it'll seem sensible to place the sofa in the middle of the room, a TV stand in the front as well as perhaps a cute three item dining area set in the back. The back of the couch can be the separator you have to designate your dining area. So there you curently have two different rooms. After that toward the end of the area, you could have your bed.

Ways to Separate a Room

Although some may disagree, I believe separating a studio apartment, which is simply one room is crucial - particularly the bed from all of those other room. Having gone the 'open up space' route, I quickly realized that separating a studio area adds functionality as opposed to having your bed and living space back-to-back.

There are many of ways you can separate a room - here are the major options you have.

  • Bookcase room divider. This one is my favored route, particularly with bookcases that have both sides finished. Not merely does a bookcase separate an area, in addition, it does double-duty as storage space and book display case. It could even double as a night stand by placing your lamp using one of the shelves. I really like how it keeps the area airy, while partitioning off the bed-area from the living room and looking so chic!
  • Folding screens. These come in all different sizes (short/tall, wide/narrow) and styles. They really work as even more of a symbolic divider, required since most of us need some privacy. Screens can also be an easy way to completely conceal your mattress through the use of two of them. You also have the option to getting a shoji, a Japanese-style room divider.
  • Curtains. This is an easy strategy to use - who needs walls when you can have a curtain? Well probably if you would like some privacy and quiet time but otherwise, curtains are cheap, easy to install, and easy to remove. It's a great temporary solution!
